Once you have a niche, it’s time to build your content strategy. 3. Select Your Channels

There’s no wrong answer for which social channels to be on and avoid. Facebook is the most popular, with 94% of marketers using Facebook worldwide as of January 2020, followed by LinkedIn with 76%. Facebook is by far the most popular, with a 61% market share in 2016. But that dropped from 65% in 2015, and other social channels still have validity. While we enjoy my time on certain channels more than others, We advise you not to play favorites when engaging your audiences.
Do your best to show up everywhere.
Besides Twitter, Mr. Patel is on Facebook. (So are we) His pages get a ton of traffic and which we imagine does wonder for his conversion rate. He is also active on LinkedIn and Pinterest, (which he thinks is even more visually appealing than Instagram but we wholeheartedly disagree.)  And, last but not least,  his unbelievable one million followers on his YouTube channel. Each channel has a different audience (and audience size) expecting different content. You don’t have to stay this active on so many channels, but pick one or two to start building out your influence. Think of each social channel as another platform for you to reach your customers (and the general public).

4. Network Within the Industry

In order to become an influencer, you need to make real connections. Everyone wants to sit at home on their couch and connect with influencers on social media. That’s simply not an option. Popular tech influencer iJustine, for example, has 1.2 million Twitter followers. She’s very active with her followers, but can’t possibly engage individually with all 1.2 million in any meaningful way. Where you can network with Justine Ezarik is at technology trade shows like CES, the Webby Awards, the Streamys, and several other events. You can follow her social accounts to see which events she attends. Event marketing is a big trend. Being able to boast about influencer attendance is huge. Why not make it a priority for marketing yourself? Get off the couch, get out of the house, and get to major events related to your niche. Or, even easier, attend online events, which are becoming more popular in the post-Covid world.

5. Participate in Off-site Forums

Becoming popular on one social network does have its advantages. For example, in 2020, the most popular YouTubers earn more than a billion dollars a year from advertisements and sponsorships. Not all of us can be that lucky. The rest of us have to venture outside social media and participate in forums, comment wells, and other online discussions so we can boost our following. Every discussion you can be a part of online enhances your reputation, influence, and connections.

6. Create a Website or Blog

Conversations don’t end on social media. You’ll always have more to say than can fit in a tweet or Instagram post. With a website or blog, you have a place to direct your social followers as you gain them.

Personally, We are huge fans of blogging. One of the best content management systems for creating either a website or blog is WordPress. Don’t be an influencer without a cause. Be prepared to lead your followers into your well-designed conversion funnel, starting by including a link to your blog in your social media posts. A link to your website or blog can actually increase your audience engagement on social media. And it goes without saying the longer blog content needs to provide even more value than a social post to get clicks.

7. Provide Value to the Conversation

If you’re not providing value to the conversation, you’ll never reach the ears of anyone influential. To become an influencer, you need to be the person people are talking to each other about. Word of mouth is the most influential element driving purchase decisions today.

If you can impress people enough with your knowledge and conversational value, they’ll sell everybody else on you. Then they’ll tell two friends, and so on…until you become an influencer!

8. Stay Ahead of Current Events

There are two types of content, evergreen and topical. Evergreen content stays forever relevant, such as an article about a historical event. Topical content is hot right now, but will soon be forgotten. Basically, everything happening today. When writing a blog post, I’d stay as evergreen as possible since you don’t want to have to update your content constantly. Even if you don’t use a particular social media channel, if you want to become an influencer it’s still important to understand who does. I’m not a big user of Snapchat, for example, but I understand its 250 million+ (mostly younger) users can’t be ignored. Because the demographics of who uses each channel are so varied, each social network requires a different strategy. 10. Stay Authentic and On-Brand

Going back to the Super Bowl, it’s an interesting event. Why? Because brands have made the commercials as anticipated as the actual game. Many come through with epic TV spots that tell their brand story.

The takeaway: it’s important to be authentic and stick to your brand voice to become an influencer. Digital ad spend grew 18% in February 2021 compared to a year prior. TV ad spending declined nearly 27% over the same period. This means an authentic voice on social media is more critical than an expensive Super Bowl commercial.

Picture your domain name as your brand’s search representative. Some TLDs may block your branding because of spam associations, while others could improve your search results. Below, we’ll unpack some of the most common TLDs to help you select the perfect domain name for your business.

Some Top-Level Domains Aren’t Available to Everyone

Not all domain names are available for anyone to buy. These are restricted top-level domains known as rTLDs. To obtain an rTLD, you need to meet specific criteria laid out by the TLD’s registry. For example:

  1. .gov and .mil are reserved for official government and military uses and are controlled by the US government.
  2. .edu is an extension only available to eligible postsecondary constitutions in the U.S., some governing boards, and nonprofits where 75 percent of their members are eligible educational groups.
  3. .name is reserved for individuals.

Trademarked rTLDs aren’t available unless you can prove you are the trademark owner. For example, you can’t buy a .nescafe or .walmart domain name unless you own the company in question. rTLDs can also be geo-location domain names. You can’t buy a .nyc domain name unless you have a valid New York City address. These rules help prevent fraud and forgery and give users a sense of security when using these sites.

Domain Selection, When to Use “.com” Domain Extension

If you run a business, blog, or another professional website, a .com TLD is probably the way to go. The .com stands for commercial. It’s one of the best TLD domains to use because people view it as credible, trustworthy, and more memorable than other complicated domain extensions. In fact, .com is the most trusted TLD. Plus, people are 3.8 times more likely to simply assume a domain ends in a .com than anything else, in other words, if they try to go directly to your website, they’ll probably end with a .com by default.

However, there’s a catch. Anyone can register a .com domain extension, and because it suits a range of business types from business coaches to online stores, it’s not easy to find a .com no one is using already.

If your perfect domain name is unavailable, not all hope is lost. There are strategies you can use before settling on a complete rebrand. For instance, you could buy the domain from its current owner or use a reasonable variation on your company’s name. Trying alternative domain extensions is also an option. like .net (more on this below) or add a country code if it makes sense to do so.

Domain Selection: When to Select .org Domain Extension

The .org stands for “organization” and is commonly used by nonprofits, social causes, groups, and clubs. Examples include:

  1. charitynavigator.org
  2. kidneyfund.org
  3. doctorswithoutborders.org

Using the .org extension can give your brand more credibility than other extension options. Anyone can register a .org—there isn’t a regulating body. However, it’s best to buy another domain extension if your site doesn’t fit into one of those three categories.

Why? Many users already associate the domain with nonprofits and groups, and it could be confusing if you’re a SaaS business with a .org. Worse, if you don’t run a nonprofit, consumers could feel like you’re trying to trick them by having a .org. If you run a nonprofit and want to use .org, keep in mind that 44 percent of people remember .com TLDs, while only 32 percent recall .org extensions.

Domain Selection: When to Select .net Domain Extension

The .net domain extension is another option for businesses, but it’s not a great fit for everyone. The .net stands for network, and the extension is for:

  • internet service providers
  • network services
  • online technology companies
  • database providers

If your business has nothing to do with tech, it usually won’t be the best option. An excellent example of an exception to the rule is behance.net. The website is an online design community and has nothing to do with providing internet or database services. However, it works for their brand because it is a network for designers and clients to find each other.

From an SEO point of view, the .net is better than most other lesser-known extensions if you’re in the tech industry or work for another brand .net fits with. It’s been around long enough for people to remember it, and it’s considered trustworthy and authoritative.

How to Buy a .com, .org. ,or .net TLD

Ready to buy a domain name? Fortunately, it’s usually a straightforward process. Two of my favorite domain registrars are Bluehost and Namecheap. Both sites are easy and straightforward to use, though they serve different purposes. Bluehost provides hosting and other services, while Namecheap is strictly for buying domains. You can buy common TLDs such as .com, .net and .org as well as alternative domain extensions like .io, .so, .new, etc.

Besides branding, choosing a TLD has an impact on your SEO. Here are the main things you need to consider when deciding on a TLD domain.

Public Perception and Spam

Unfortunately, some TLDs are associated with nefarious online behavior. If you use them, Google might assume your site isn’t safe, and you’ll never make it to the top of search results.

According to Spamhaus, these are the TLDs with the spam worst reputations:

  1. .date
  2. .surf
  3. .cam
  4. .bar
  5. .icu

Besides search engine rankings, using an alternative domain extension can affect your click-through rate (CTR). For example, if your target audience is unfamiliar with the TLD, they might not view your site as safe, and you won’t get traffic. In the same study from GrowthBadger, these were the TLDs that have the lowest trustworthiness, factoring in things other than spam:

Using an Industry-Specific TLD

Depending on your industry, using an industry-specific TLD could boost your SEO. For example, several start-ups use the TLD of .tech or .io. Other options include using .food for a food blog or .travel for a tour operator. Using an industry-specific TLD tells Google and people what your site is all about, which can help improve your rankings and CTR. Examples of sites using industry TLDs:

  1. visitdurban.travel
  2. voodoo.io
  3. nothing.tech

Yes, we know we just said .io had a low trustworthiness rating. This is because many folks simply don’t know what it refers to, which is understandable. This TLD is a play on I/O, meaning input/output in computer science terms, so it follows that tech (particularly gaming) companies would use it.

Domain Selection: Geotargeting

Your business will eventually tie to a specific location You might get an SEO boost by using geotargeting in your TLD. It signals to Google that your site serves a particular country or city, and it could make your pages visible to people searching from those locations. You can also use TLD geotargeting if you have a business that operates in multiple countries worldwide. For example, Amazon has:

  • amazon.com (USA)
  • amazon.co.uk (United Kingdom)
  • amazon.nl (Netherlands)
  • amazon.de (Germany)
  • amazon.fr (France)

A top-level domain is an integral part of your website’s structure. Before you buy one, take the time to look at the different TLD options and select the best one to represent your business online. If you need to change your TLD or domain name later, you can. But, you’ll need to redirect the old domain and every page to the new one, and it can take up to six months for your traffic to recover.

Researching isn’t just Googling, consider carefully and deeply ask yourself “what should I write a blog about? The first step to a blog is to figure out what your audience is Googling. What are their pain points? How can we answer them? What can you do to educate them?

Use sites such as:

Spend time in any of the groups and read up on the conversations. Find out what topics are trending in your industry or questions your audience is asking. You may even come across some of your audience’s pain points, and you’ll know exactly how to help. Before you know it, you will have a perfect idea for your next blog topic. Research is the most critical part of creating a blog. Without research, you wouldn’t know what your audience wants to know, and without that information, you won’t have content to create. Use your research time to figure out how you can help your audience.

2. Determine your keywords

Keywords are important. They’re not only to provide content for your blog but also to get recognized by Google SERP as relevant and informative. After completing step one, check out Google Ads. It has a Keyword Discovery Tool that discovers new keywords for you. Search for words or phrases related to your products or services. It will help you find the keywords that are most relevant for your topic entered. When researching keywords, this tool gives your insight into how often certain words are searched and how those searches have changed over time. This tool can help you narrow your keyword list down to the ones you want.

3. Create an outline

An outline is the best way to a more organized, and important when you want to have a less stressful writing experience.  After completing steps 1 and 2, it is time to put together your research and keywords to create your blog outline. This outline will be a brief, bulleted look at what you want your blog to include.
To begin, create your title and Your headlines. These will be the topics you will be hitting in your blog. 
Each heading should include keywords and be phrased in a way people would search it in Google.

For example:
If your blog is about the best products for natural hair, your blog title could be Best Products for Natural Hair, a section within the article could be, Best Shampoos for Natural Hair.

Also, when writing your headlines, label each headline with a heading tag. By adding in headline tags, it helps you organize your thoughts into a more organized outline. Plus, it makes it easier at the end when it’s time to enter your blog in your CMS.

Since all of your content ideas are already down on paper, start from the beginning and fill in the blanks. By that, I mean make your bullet points full sentences.

This is the time to expand your thoughts and answer the questions to your headlines. Get more in-depth about your topic and just write. This step doesn’t have to be perfect because you are solely building and expanding your thoughts. Another way to add more resourceful content is by doing research and adding in data to back up your points.

Key Tip: While it varies per industry, the optimal length for a blog post is in the 2,250 – 2,500 words range.

 

5. Include Add-ins

Once you have arrived at the Add-in stage you are two steps away from being the master of writing blogs. Add-ins can be any sort of different pieces of content you can add to a blog. 
For instance:

  • Images
  • CTAs
  • A comment section,
  • Other Images

Every blog should include images, pictures within a blog makes it visually appealing to your readers and break down your content much easier. Images also give you a more vivid piece of content to post on social media platforms and provide your audience with something to share with their followers.

Now that your blog is in order, it is now time to edit your draft and do finish touches to it. Once you finish editing your blog post, re-read it to make sure you hit all the points you wanted to mention in the blog. Moreover, ensure that you take a very good look at your title; your audience is always captivated by how tasteful your title is.

Bloggers always miss out on high traffic to their blog because they miss the opportunity to promote them.  An easy way to promote your blog is to search for blogs that could link to your article and reach out to other bloggers and use the link from theirs as well. This way you and other bloggers will get new bloggers to your website.
